Studio Berg eyewear concept for 30th anniversary of Emporio Armani
Today Emporio Armani and eyewear license holder Safilo SpA launched an advertising campaign to celebrate 30 years of the Emporio Armani brand. Studio Berg created the concept behind the visuals that can be seen across Italy from the beginning of October and world wide from November. “The Emporio brand is a bolder, more extrovert and sometimes ironic interpretation of the Armani signature. The concept for this eyewear campaign was inspired by the iconic shape and many possible colors of the product, as well as by the glamorous 80’s heritage of the brand”, says Studio Berg Creative Director Joel Berg. The still life images were shot in Stockholm by photographer Pelle Berglund.

Joel Berg designs for Marsotto edizioni
Joel Berg makes his debut as a product designer in the collection of Marsotto edizioni with a lamp named Luma. Marsotto edizioni presented its first collection of designs rigorously made in white Carrara marble at Milan’s Salone del Mobile in 2010. From that moment on, under the art direction of James Irvine, Marsotto edizioni has become a collection of pieces which refer to an international culture, like the team of designers who enthusiastically take part in this project. This year’s collection includes pieces designed by Alberto Meda, Claesson Koivisto Rune, Jasper Morrison, Konstantin Grcic, Maddalena Casadei, Naoto Fukasawa, Thomas Sandell, James Irvine, Ross Lovegrove and Joel Berg.
Joel Berg is an internationally renowned Art Director with a background in advertising and graphic design. He is a collector of modernist furniture and art. Berg has a passion for product and furniture design and the collaboration with Marsotto edizioni is his first furniture creation for the public. Berg has aimed to create timeless pieces that will live well next to many different styles of homes or public spaces. “Marble is a fantastic material that lives forever and makes each piece unique, and by using it together with the light of a lamp I wanted to make the individuality of the material stand out even more”, says Berg about his Luma lamps.

Swedish Art Director behind redesign of Italy’s main weekly news magazine
L’Espresso – Italy’s main politically independent weekly is changing its looks.
Swedish Art Director Joel Berg is responsible for the new graphic expression of the magazine.
L’Espresso, one of Italy’s two largest weeklies and the one that is not controlled by Berlusconi’s Mediaset, is changing its looks under the direction of Joel Berg. The founder of advertising agency Studio Berg in Milan has been working with L’Espresso since 2003 when he and the former editor-in-chief began the work of restoring the reputation of the magazine through an updated design and refreshed content. Three years later L’Espresso re-established itself as a strong driver in the political opposition with investigative journalism, political revelations and a revised, sharp graphic style signalling journalistic warfare. It is now time for the next generation of L’Espresso, again with Berg behind the graphic form. ”L’Espresso has since its inception in 1955 been respected because of its investigate journalism, and since the new millennium we have again proven that we can lead and create public debate in Italy”, says Berg. ”In the third graphic redesign that I have been responsible for we become drier, style-wise more correct and breathe international quality at par with international press like Der Spiegel, Newsweek, and TIME. It has been a fantastic project to change L’Espresso from a sleeping beauty and rebel to the most credible weekly in Italy”, says Berg. The first issue with the new design is in newsstands on February 25.
The advertising and branding agency Studio Berg was founded in 2006 by Joel Berg. Studio Berg focuses on communication strategies for brands in the fashion, design and lifestyle sectors. Joel Berg is creative director/art director of two of Italy’s largest women’s magazines; D - La Repubblica and fashion magazine Velvet and the creative force behind advertising campaigns Benetton, Marc O’ Polo, H&M etc. Studio Berg is based in Milan and plans to open an office in Stockholm during 2011.

Joel Berg changes the looks of Italian fashion magazine Velvet
One of Italy’s largest fashion magazines, Velvet, gets a more mature look designed by Swedish creative director
Joel Berg.
Five years ago Joel Berg was part of the team that started the Italian monthly fashion magazine Velvet, which has since established itself as a significant voice in fashion media. Velvet now steps up from being a younger and louder magazine to being a more serious publication with increased weight on the journalistic content. Through this change the magazine becomes a serious competitor to international titles such as Elle and Marie Claire.
”The only thing that remains from the previous version is the name and the logo, the rest is new”, says Joel Berg, creative director at Velvet and founder of advertising and branding agency Studio Berg in Milan. ”I wanted to be sure that Velvet isn’t seen as a local product but that it has an international expression, something that is important not the least to advertisers and therefore to the commercial success of Velvet.”
As the creative director of Velvet, Berg is responsible for the structure and the visual form of the magazine. During the five years since the first issue he has continuously driven the evolution of the particular photographic and typographic style, which is now changing. ”It’s natural for a magazine to change its looks from time to time. It’s important both for readers and advertisers that the magazine stays contemporary and the new Velvet feels very now”, according to Joel Berg.
The first issue with the new design is in newsstands on February 16.
