In 1992, Joel joined the team that, under legendary fashion editor Liz Tilberis, transformed the Hearst Corporation’s flagship publication into what was widely acclaimed as the most ground-breaking and innovative fashion magazine of modern times. As art director, he not only worked closely with some of the world’s greatest photographers, including Patrick Demarchelier, Mario Testino, Richard Avedon, David Sims and Mario Sorrenti, but also – in what was a daring departure from conventional practice – commissioned exclusive fashion pieces from such fine artists as Cindy Sherman, Robert Rauschenberg, Matthew Barney, Barbara Kruger and Alex Katz. The twenty-five issues that he directed between 1992 and 1994 are today considered to be modern classics of magazine design.
